Selling Your Intarsia
By Jerry Mifflin
Our challenge as Crafter's and intarsia artists is to learn our markets. You desire to learn your market, who is your client?
Are you selling a product to local or global customers.
If you are selling to local customers say out of a storefront, you should really know if you're in the correct market and selling at the right cost for this local customer. If you aren't showing the right product to the right client list, chances are they are will not be any sales are at least tiny.
It just makes sense that If your selling a product that's not of use to the client and it is not a thing that they see they desire or need, you had better locate either different markets or a different product to sell from your store.
I use to have a shop that sold easy crafts like little animal yard and driveway signs. I sold plenty of country style decorative items for the interiors of their homes. These items sold well for the reason that I was living in a rural area where my clients had big yards and long driveways.
These individuals loved the country style of decorating. They loved the crafts I was creating for them. I even had other crafters producing items for me to sell for them. I was producing and selling to my market base.
If I was attempting to sell the country style signs or plaques where I am living immediately, in the city, I'd not do so well. For my client base isn't no different. Their yards are different, their driveway is short and their interior decorating can not be no different sort of "country style." So for this new client list you've to adjust your product line.
Does your product fit into the decorating scheme of the majority of your clients, if not tiny will purchase. You should be sure that your craft fits using your prospects or your enterprise will fail. You absolutely should the time to read and learn this. Locate the proper market place.
Crafts individuals are used in having buddies and close family and friends telling them how cool and the way gorgeous there craft is, this is encouraging. The dilemma is that it's not realistic. You should get input and about your product from a source that'll provide you a useful honest response about your product.
When your clients come into your shop and say how much they like what you are doing however walk out with no buying anything you've to put to yourself, what is wrong?
Are you in the correct market for the craft you sell?
If your craft fits your client, how is your cost? The cost you sell your product for can must be adjusted up or down.
For the cost setting you should look at your competition.
At what cost are they selling a comparable product. Ask yourself can I make a gain selling my product at that cost. Can I sell my product and receive a greater price? What can I do to create my product worth more cash?
I immediately sell art, "intarsia woodworking art" that's higher priced, which means for the client to let go of the cash, she will need to truly love your product.
Crafts, can be a tough market. I'm a cabinetmaker, caught up on the globe of art. I adore to add artistic designs to cabinet doors to make them stand out from what other individuals build. The cabinets add atmosphere to a room by giving the room character and there by adding value.
I've managed to sell many my work over time. My prices are usually from about $200 to $15,000 depending on the work involved. As I said prior to, a number of time ago I'd a craft shop in a tiny town. I built each wood craft I could think of to develop and it was fun, however not truly much cash.
The cash just comes after you gain knowledge of the business end of the craft market.
As a cabinetmaker I've learned with difficulty that you should earn money for the hours that you work, even when you adore the work.
How much ought to I charge for my work?
It's basically no different for the majority of businesses, how much would you like to pay yourself an hour. Only add to that a percentage for overhead plus a percentage for money and add material cost. That gives you a charging rate for every single one of your items. You should add the profit, that provids you the cash to grow, like buying more tools.
My charging rate depends on if it's commercial or residential, $45-$85 an hour depending on the way custom the work is.
In my old "craft shop" my charging rate, at that time, was $35 hour, the cost fit the product and the overhead.
If you are able to sell your craft as "ART" it is certain to boost the amount you are able to charge for your product. Perceived value!
Do you've awards! Do you've newspaper and magazine articles about you! Do you've references? Have you developed a recognizable name for your market? If not, you should work towards these things. All of this adds to the perceived value of your craft.
Intarsia woodworking is my craft, my art. It's the work I look with eagerness to doing.
Locate the craft you adore to create, locate the correct client list, set a reasonable cost for your work and your on the path to a thriving satisfying life.
